For over 15 years, Media Defence has been the legal lifeline for independent journalists worldwide.
Since 2008, we’ve supported over 2,000 cases, helping journalists across 120 countries fight back against those intent on silencing them. From pursuing strategic cases to challenge unjust laws and practices, to providing direct emergency legal assistance, we are committed to defending those who uncover the truth. We’re not just fighting cases — we’re also building a global network of over 400 lawyers and 22 partners to provide legal defence at the local level.
But with autocracy on the rise, and the threats to journalists becoming more complex and sophisticated, the demand for our support has never been higher.
As threats evolve, so do we.
Media Defence is at a pivotal point, ready to consolidate its foundations and expand its reach, impact, and ambition. While continuing our crucial work, we are exploring innovative ways to enhance our support by focusing on four key areas:
Violence Against Journalists, Lawfare, Digital Rights, and Promoting Accountability and Fighting Impunity.
These priority areas will anchor and guide our goals. They will help us to expand emergency legal defence to support those most in need, strengthen global legal networks to protect independent journalism, pursue impactful strategic litigation and advocate for the implementation of judgments.
